Reflection is what a mirror does--light bounces off the surface.
Refraction is what a lens does, or the distortion you see when you look
at a straw in a glass of water--light passes through the surface (the
glass or the water), but it bends a little.
Turning on the "trace" options tells LW to model these effects using
raytracing. They are options because they're time-consuming and not
always needed.
